Fiberglass Boat Restoration Tips
There is nothing which can make a boat look like new than quality fiberglass. So should you be restoring a classic boat, it can do wonders for its appearance. However, it does mean unsightly fiberglass has the effect of just the opposite, as it can age your boat. To keep your boat looking good, you will need to restore the fiberglass to its original finish. But fiberglass can be quite a finicky material to work with. To handle it, you will need more than a few products. Which is why we at Barracuda Boat Restoration Inc. have listed a few helpful fiberglass boat restoration tips for people living outside of the Miami, FL area.
While cleaning never use products which are known to remove gel coat
When you are performing a complete restoration, you must remove the gel coat in order to work with the fiberglass directly. This is part of the process. However, in the meantime, you need to make sure you purchase boat cleaners which will not damage your fiberglass gel coat. This is in place to maintain the fiberglass’s appearance, in addition to protecting it against everything which a boat faces on a daily basis.
When your boat is faded or worn, you will need a new gel coat
The chances are great that you ignored our previous tip for a while. Should this be the case, the time has come for a full fiberglass restoration process, this will remove and replace any leftover gel coat. In addition to using detergent to clean your boat off first, you should consider using acetone also. Remember to wear rubber gloves for this in order to protect your hands. Once properly applied, your fiberglass is ready for waxing and polishing.
When you have exposed the fiberglass, always use a rubbing compound
A fiberglass rubbing compound is specially designed to reduce gel coat damage while preparing your hull for its wax. This can also be applied to spot clean common issues such as oxidation and stains without removing the gel coat layer in the process.
